Description

The Stan Kenton Deluxe Set is a threeLP Capitol Records anthology drawn from Kentons Creative World period, presenting a broad survey of his orchestral jazz output. The compilation spans studio and arranged works that highlight Kentons approach to largeensemble writing, characterized by dense harmonies, brassforward voicings, and a focus on modernist orchestration within a jazz framework.

The selections include Kenton originals such as Artistry in Rhythm, Opus in Pastels, and Eager Beaver, alongside interpretations of standards, film themes, and Broadway compositions. Arrangements reflect contributions from key Kenton collaborators including Pete Rugolo and Gene Roland, whose writing helped define the bands midcentury sound. The set also includes adaptations of classical material, such as the excerpt from Tristan und Isolde, illustrating Kentons interest in integrating symphonic elements into jazz performance.

This compilation was produced by Capitols longtime jazz A&R figure Lee Gillette and represents the labels effort to present a comprehensive overview of Kentons stylistic rangefrom ballads and standards to experimental orchestral jazz. The set serves as an accessible entry point into Kentons catalog while also functioning as a curated retrospective for collectors.
