This 1978 Columbia Odyssey pressing captures one of George Szell’s most celebrated interpretations with his legendary Cleveland Orchestra. Szell, who transformed Cleveland into one of America’s premier orchestras during his 24-year tenure, brought his characteristic precision and architectural clarity to Beethoven’s most rhythmically driven symphony. The Seventh, famously dubbed the “apotheosis of the dance” by Wagner, finds perfect expression under Szell’s baton his approach emphasizes the work’s propulsive energy while maintaining the structural rigor that made his Beethoven cycle so respected among classical collectors.
