Here’s a retrospective collection that captures one of the most distinctive voices in American popular music at a fascinating crossroads. Johnny Mathis had spent the late 1970s successfully adapting to the disco erasomething few crooners managed to pull offand this 1981 compilation intelligently surveys his remarkable journey from jazz-influenced balladeer to mainstream pop icon. The Canadian Columbia pressing offers that characteristically warm, full sound that Canadian plants were known for during this period, presenting Mathis’s silky tenor with the clarity it deserves across genres that span from his early jazz work through his chart-topping ballads and surprising disco ventures.
