Here’s a fascinating piece of mid-60s exotica that showcases Billy Vaughn at his most adventurous. “Mexican Pearls” finds the master of easy listening orchestration diving deep into Latin arrangements, featuring his signature saxophone leads floating over mariachi-influenced brass sections and traditional Mexican percussion. Vaughn, who had already established himself as a chart-topping bandleader with his distinctive “twin sax” sound, used this album to explore beyond his typical pop instrumental comfort zone, incorporating authentic Mexican folk melodies alongside his own compositions.
